DLLR Assistant Secretary Named to Power 20 List

BALTIMORE (2/23/10) - The Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation announced that Julie Ellen Squire, Assistant Secretary of Unemployment Insurance, has been named by the Baltimore Business Journal to its Power 20 list of the area's most powerful business men and women for 2010.

"Julie has worked for DLLR for more than 10 years and has distinguished herself as a master of policy detail and organization," said DLLR Secretary Alexander M. Sanchez. "She has overseen the Division in a time of unprecedented demand, with a focus on serving the more than 200,000 Marylanders who have lost jobs through no fault of their own during the economic downturn and who count on unemployment insurance as their lifeline.

"Our department, state government and the citizens of Maryland are fortunate to have such a competent, committed public servant working on our behalf - especially in times like the present when her job is so incredibly difficult.

"Julie's passion for her mission, her management style and her creative approaches to problem-solving have earned her tremendous credibility in Annapolis as well."

Assistant Secretary Squire will be honored at a ceremony Thursday evening at the Hilton Hotel in downtown Baltimore. The Power 20 is an illustrious group that this year also includes Lt. Gen. Keith Alexander, director of the National Security Agency; Peter G. Angelos, head of Law Offices of Peter G. Angelos and majority owner of the Baltimore Orioles, Mayo A. Shattuck III, chairman and chief executive officer, Constellation Energy Group Inc.; David Cordish, president of the Cordish Cos.; Freeman A. Hrabowski III, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County; and Kathleen T. Snyder, president and chief executive officer of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce.

The winners are chosen through an election process and then reviewed by the Baltimore Business Journal editorial board.

Ms. Squire has been with DLLR since 1999. Before becoming Assistant Secretary of Unemployment Insurance last October, she served as the division's deputy director and as legal counsel from the Office of the Attorney General. She previously worked for the law firm of Gallagher, Evelius & Jones and the U.S. District Court.

She received her bachelor's degree from Goucher College and her Juris Doctorate from the Ohio State University College of Law.
