IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE LICENSING
EXAMINATION
Important information for applicants for the licensing examination: please note that even though
you may qualify to sit for the licensing examination under the CLARB's examination standards,
you may or may not have requisite educational and experiential qualifications as a Maryland
candidate. If you intend to take all or any part of the CLARB examination with a goal of becoming
a Maryland licensed landscape architect, you must first file an application with the Maryland Board
of Examiners of Landscape Architects to ascertain your requisite pre-examination qualifications.
In addition, please note that beginning in the Fall of 2012, the L.A.RE. will transition from
the five-part exam to four parts and will be administered directly by CLARB using a computer-based,
test administration system. The Maryland board will no longer be involved in the administration of
the examination. For information on the new exam and transition details, go to

HOW TO QUALIFY FOR THE EXAM - You must meet the meet the educational/experience
requirements in either (b), (c), (d), or (e) below.
§ 9-303. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
(a) Before an applicant takes the examination given by the Board, the applicant shall qualify
under this section by meeting the educational and experience requirements set forth in subsection
(b), (c), (d), or (e) of this section.
(b) An applicant qualifies under this section if the applicant:
(1) has been graduated from a college or school of landscape architecture
that holds accredited status from the national Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board; and
(2) has at least 2 years of work experience in landscape architecture that is:
(i) under the responsible charge of a
licensed landscape architect or other authorized individual; and
(ii) otherwise satisfactory to the Board.
(c) An applicant qualifies under this section if the applicant:
(1) has been graduated on completion of at least a 4-year curriculum in a
design-related discipline from a college or university that is accredited by, or is a constituent
unit of an institution accredited by, the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools or the
equivalent regional accrediting association of other regional areas; and
(2) has at least 4 years of work experience in landscape architecture that is:
(i) under the responsible charge of a
licensed landscape architect or other authorized individual; and
(ii) otherwise satisfactory to the Board.
(d) An applicant qualifies under this section if the applicant:
(1) has been graduated on completion of at least a 4-year curriculum in a
nondesign-related discipline from a college or university that is accredited by, or is a constituent
unit of an institution accredited by, the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools or the
equivalent regional accrediting association of other regional areas; and
(2) has at least 6 years of practical work experience in landscape
architecture that is:
(i) under the responsible charge of a
licensed landscape architect or other authorized individual; and
(ii) otherwise satisfactory to the Board.
(e) (1) An applicant qualifies under this section if the applicant:
(i) is a high school graduate or the
equivalent; and
(ii) has at least 8 years of practical work
experience in landscape architecture that is:
1. under the responsible charge of a licensed landscape architect or other authorized individual; and
2. otherwise satisfactory to the Board.
(2) The Board may count each full year of study at a college or school of
landscape architecture that meets the criteria set forth in subsection (b) of this section as one of
the years of the work experience required under this subsection.
HOW TO APPLY
First-time applicants may obtain an application for the L.A.R.E. by contacting the Board at
410-230-6256 or landscape@dllr.state.md.us.
The filing deadline for first-time candidates is 90 days prior to the examination date. First-time
applicants must have an original transcript sent directly from the school to the State Board and it
must be received by the 90 day deadline. The application, fee, and any other supporting documentation
must be received by the State Board by the deadline. Postmarks are not acceptable.

Approved candidates will be notified of their eligibility to sit for the examination and instructions
on how to register for the exam.

Pass/Fail Notification
CLARB will notify you of your exam results. Check their website for release dates.
Landscape Architect License
Candidates who have successfully completed all parts of the exam will receive instructions with the exam
results explaining how to file online for a Landscape Architect license. Licenses expire two years from
the date of issuance.
Americans With Disabilities
Requests for special testing accommodations must be reviewed and approved by CLARB and must be received
no later than 60 days prior to the exam administration. Contact them at
