Individual Architect (License)
Subject to
exceptions stated in the law, an individual who practices architecture in Maryland is required to hold a
license issued by the Board. An individual can obtain licensure by examination or reciprocity.
ORIGINAL LICENSE BY EXAMINATION
Requirements: Candidates must:
- Possess five education credits (earned either by possession of a degree from a NAAB-accredited college, a combination of education and qualifying work experience, or work experience only), and
- Be enrolled in or have completed the Intern Development Program
(IDP). The average duration of the IDP is three years.

Application process
To apply for the Architectural Registration Examination (A.R.E.), an applicant may download or request a
copy of the application
from the Board at
architect@dllr.state.md.us.
Applications that are complete on the Friday before the next Board meeting will be submitted to the Board for consideration. Once approved for examination, the applicant will be directly notified and receive an Authorization to Take the Test (ATT) form, a Bulletin of Information, and a list of the test center locations. The Bulletin contains all the information needed to understand how to self-schedule and pay for the parts of the examination.

Firm (Permit)
A partnership, corporation, or limited liability company through which architecture is practiced in Maryland must hold a permit issued by the Board. Two-thirds of the partners, directors, or members must be licensed in Maryland or any other state to practice architecture, engineering or landscape architecture. One partner, director, or member shall be appointed to be in responsible charge of architecture practiced through the firm and must be a licensed
MARYLAND architect.
Applicants for firm permit may apply:

Complete application
and mail to the Board Office with check (made payable to "DLLR-Architect")
Please note: All firms, except a partnership, must provide a Certificate of Good Standing/Certificate
of Status from either:
- The State of Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation, if applicable; OR,
- The chartering authority of the state of formation.
Permit Fee
Permit Period: The permit period is two years from the date of issuance.
RECIPROCAL LICENSE
An architect seeking licensure by reciprocity can apply in one of two ways.
1. Licensure by Reciprocity: An architect who is licensed in another state, but does not have
a NCARB Record.
In order to qualify for licensure by reciprocity under this criteria, an individual must have met the
requirements in the state of original licensure that were at least equal to those required, at that time or
at the time of application, by the Maryland Board of Architects. The Maryland Board requires that individuals
who took the A.R.E. for the first time in July 1, 1996 and thereafter, must complete the IDP which must be
documented by NCARB. If this applies to you and you took the examination in a state that did not require IDP,
you must document your IDP through NCARB before you can be granted a license by reciprocity in the State of
Maryland.

- Submit three letters of character reference.
- Provide verification of licensure in another state
- Download and complete application and mail to the Board
