Maryland State Athletic Commission Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, January 21, 2026
On Wednesday, January 21, 2026 the Maryland State Athletic Commission meeting was called to order by Chairman David Norman at 3:00p.m. Present were the following: Chairman David Norman, Commissioner Dr. Kristi Hall, Commissioner Carl Wilson, Commissioner James Wilkins, Commissioner James “Binky” Jones, John Dove, Commissioner for O&P, Sarah McDermott, Assistant Commissioner for O&P, Matthew Venuti, Assistant Attorney General and Counsel, Aajah Harris, Policy Director for O&P, Jason Curtis, Administrative Specialist, Olga Escobar, Administrative Officer, and Executive Director Johnston Brown This was a virtual meeting with Commission members, Commission staff, and the public using the Google Meets platform. The meeting was recorded.
Approval of commission minutes
Minutes were discussed from the meeting of December 17, 2025. Commissioner Wilson made a motion to approve the minutes and seconded by Commissioner Wilkins. The minutes were unanimously approved.
Approval / cancellation / ratification of commission-sanctioned events
Executive Director Johnston Brown advised the Commission that the following sanctioned wrestling event was cancelled; Voltage Wrestling on January 9th.
Chairman’s report
Chairman David Norman introduced Assistant Attorney General, Matthew Venuti, to the Commission and stated that he will be the new counsel for the Commission. He also stated to the Commission that Commissioner for O&P, John Dove, will testify to the senate on behalf of the Commission for extending the medical validity for fighters from 30 days to 90.
Executive director’s report
Executive Director Johnston Brown had no report.
Review of commission sanctioned events
Executive Director Johnston Brown advised the Commission about the wrestling events from the previous month. Those events included the following:
- Flying V Wrestling, December 20th, Silver Spring
- WWE Wrestling, December 26th, Baltimore,
- MCW Wrestling, December 27th, Joppa
- ACW Wrestling, December 28th, Glen Burnie
- Micro-Wrestling Allstars, December 28th, Leonardtown
- EWA Wrestling, January 17th, Bel Air
Upcoming events
Executive Director Johnston Brown led the Commission in a discussion of upcoming events, which included the following:
- MCW Wrestling, January 23rd, Joppa
- MCW Wrestling, January 24th, Hollywood
- No Xcuse Promotions Boxing, January 30th, Maryland Live!
- Midget Mayhem Wrestling, February 2nd, Pasadena
- ACW Wrestling, February 6th, Baltimore
- Jeter Promotions Boxing, February 21st, Maryland Live!
A motion to approve the upcoming MCW wrestling events on January 23rd and January 24th was made by Commissioner Wilson and seconded by Commissioner Hall. The motion was unanimously approved by the Commission.
A motion to approve the upcoming No Xcuse Promotions boxing event on January 30th was made by Commissioner Wilson and seconded by Commissioner Wilkins. The motion was unanimously approved by the Commission.
A motion to approve the upcoming Midget Mayhem Wrestling event on February 2nd was made by Commissioner Wilson and seconded by Commissioner Hall. The motion was unanimously approved by the Commission.
A motion to approve the upcoming ACW wrestling event on February 6th was made by Commissioner Wilson and seconded by Commissioner Hall. The motion was unanimously approved by the Commission.
A motion to approve the Jeter Promotions boxing event on February 21st was made by Commissioner Wilson and seconded by Commissioner Hall. The motion was unanimously approved by the Commission.
New business
There was no new business discussed at this meeting.
Public comments
Boxing Promoter Tony Jeter suggested to the Commission that members of the Commission who are involved in the bout approval process should be required to attend all the events to allow for more fair matchmaking.
Muay Thai Promoter Matthew Van Valkenburgh asked the Commission if there were any updates to the requirements for host pro-am events for Muay Thai.
Boxing Promoter Christen Jeter asked the Commission when the start date would be for when the medicals are increased in validity from 30 days to 90 days.
Adjournment
Chairman Dave Norman called for a motion for adjournment at roughly 3:23 pm that was made by Commissioner Wilson and seconded by Commissioner Hall. The motion was unanimously approved by the Commission.
