Registered Apprenticeship is a top workforce strategy for boosting recruitment, building talent, retaining skilled workers, and creating a safe and productive workplace. Thousands of employers across Maryland currently sponsor or participate in Registered Apprenticeship programs, and tens of thousands of Marylanders are trained through apprenticeship each year.

Apprenticeship works for large employers and small businesses alike, with flexible training options that can cover a wide range of occupations — from the building trades to healthcare, cybersecurity, and public service.

The Basics of Registered Apprenticeship

Every Registered Apprenticeship program consists of a few core elements, but each program is unique and custom-built to fit the occupation and the employer.

  • Apprenticeships are generally full-time positions, offering one year or more of supervised on-the-job learning
  • Apprentices are regular (W2) employees and their pay increases as their skills and experience increase
  • Apprentices participate in coursework that reinforces what they learn on-the-job. This can include colleges classes, trade school programs, virtual learning, or even employer-delivered in-house training programs
  • Upon completion, apprentices receive a nationally recognized Certificate of Apprenticeship Completion, issued by the Maryland Department of Labor. This certificate often accompanies additional industry certifications or occupational licenses, certifying that the apprentice is trained and qualified in their target occupation.

The Office of Apprenticeship is staffed by a full-time team of experts who provide comprehensive and completely FREE assistance to employers who are looking to launch an apprenticeship.
