15 days for Unions to Intervene
(BALTIMORE) - The Secretary of Maryland's Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, Thomas E. Perez, certified a petition by the Service Employees International (SEIU), paving the way for an election that will determine whether childcare providers in Maryland will be unionized.
Per Governor O'Malley's Executive Order, DLLR officials and the American Arbitration Association conducted the card count, involving family child care providers from the State of Maryland. The purpose of the card count was to certify SEIU's petition of an election for a collective bargaining representative. The card count was held at the office of the American Arbitration Association, 1776 Eye Street, Suite 850, Washington, DC on Monday, August 20, 2007 at 10 a.m..
Any union that wants to be on the ballot, has fifteen
(15) days, or by September 5, to present 10-percent "showing of interest cards" to the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation - Office of the Secretary - 500 North Calvert Street, Baltimore, MD 21202.
Service Employee International Union provided family child care providers' authorization cards to DLLR and the American Arbitration Association. Their names were checked against an eligibility list provided by the Maryland State Department of Education. The eligibility list contained five thousand eight hundred and sixty-six (5,866) names. Two thousand two hundred and eighty-seven (2,287) cards were submitted, of which nineteen (19) were not on list and not counted.
