DLLR Secretary to Participate in "Read Across Maryland" Month

(BALTIMORE, 3/22/10) -- Secretary Alexander M. Sanchez of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation will read to children at two public libraries this week as part of "Read Across Maryland" month as declared by Governor O'Malley and the Maryland State Education Association (MSEA). The Governor and members of his cabinet have been joining MSEA leaders all month for classroom visits and reading assemblies across the state.

"We join in this effort with the MSEA to encourage children throughout Maryland to learn and read not just for this month but for the entire year," Secretary Sanchez said.

Secretary Sanchez will be reading at the main branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore City on Tuesday, March 23rd and the New Carrollton Branch Library in Prince George's County on Thursday, March 25th.

This year's program, part of the national "Read Across America" effort, includes a partnership with the Maryland Library Association and the Maryland Association of School Librarians with a theme of "30 for 30," a challenge to parents, teachers, and students to read 30 minutes every day for 30 days for the month of March.

"Read Across America" is celebrated every year in honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday, March 2. For more information on the "Read Across Maryland" program, including a list of events, visit Read Across Maryland.
