DLLR Investigation Leads to Charges of Theft, Misrepresentation as a CPA

(BALTIMORE, 8/24/10) – The Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation and the Howard County State’s Attorney’s Office today announced that George Oluwaboro, 51, has been charged with felony theft, falsely representing himself as a certified public accountant, and practicing as a CPA without a license.

Oluwaboro is accused of holding himself out as a CPA and agreeing to perform an independent audit when he lacked the necessary credentials. After the client informed Oluwaboro that his name had failed to appear in a search of DLLR’s database of licensed CPAs, he maintained that while he would complete the work, a licensed CPA would approve and sign the final audit. The client filed a complaint with the Board of Public Accountancy, part of DLLR’s Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing. Recently, after being indicted by a grand jury, Oluwaboro was arrested by Howard County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

If convicted of all charges, he faces a maximum of 11 ½ years in prison and/or fines of up to $11,500.

“DLLR takes all consumer complaints seriously and acts swiftly to resolve them,” Secretary Alexander Sanchez said. “We thank the Howard County State’s Attorney’s Office and Sheriff’s Office for their hard work and cooperation in this case.”

Consumers and businesses are reminded that they can check whether someone is licensed to perform any service in Maryland that is regulated by the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing by visiting the DLLR website.
