Education and Workforce Transition Coordinating Council for Correctional Institutions to Hold Meeting in Hagerstown

 

BALTIMORE, MD (April 19, 2011) – The Education and Workforce Transition Coordinating Council for Correctional Institutions (Council) will hold a public meeting on Wednesday, April 27 at the Maryland Correctional Training Center in Hagerstown. The Council was established as part of legislation passed in 2008 that transferred control of Maryland's correctional education programs to the Maryland Department of Labor and is charged with providing oversight and support for correctional education that prepares offenders to join the workforce upon release. The Council assists the development and review of workforce training programs within Maryland's correctional institutions and develops regulations for the implementation of mandatory educational and workforce skills training programs.

Maryland Labor Secretary Alexander M. Sanchez and Secretary of Public Safety and Corrections Gary D. Maynard co-chair the Council. The Council is required to report annually to the Governor and General Assembly. During next week's meeting, the Council will review and vote on draft regulations.
