Apply for a Reciprocal License - Professional Land Surveyors

An applicant who is licensed to practice surveying in another jurisdiction of the United States may qualify for licensure by reciprocity if he or she provides adequate evidence that, at the time he or she was licensed in another jurisdiction, he or she met requirements that were equivalent to those required by Maryland; AND provides meets the requirements currently required by the laws of Maryland, and having passed two State-Specific Examinations:

  • Maryland Law
    Open book, 60 multiple-choice questions on Maryland law and regulations for professional land surveyors (two hours)
  • Storm Drain and Road Grade Design
    Open book, with calculator, principles and practices problem solving (four hours).

Application Process

  1. Download the Application for a Reciprocal license at the top of this page.
  2. Complete the application and mail it to the Board’s office:

    ATTN: Reciprocity
  3. When applications are deemed administratively complete, they’re then reviewed during a Board meeting (Board meets on the first Wednesday of each month). Applicants will be notified thereafter of the Board’s determination.

Reciprocal License Fee:
Because most reciprocal candidates will not have passed the state-specific exams required in Maryland, the license fee is not paid until all requirements for licensure are met.
License Period: Two-year period from the date of issuance.
