Individuals (License)
Subject to
exceptions stated in the law, an individual who practices surveying in Maryland is required to hold
a license issued by the Board.
Please read ALL Requirements and Instructions before proceeding with the
application process.
BY EXAMINATION
Once a candidate has met the requirements for examination and licensure, the Board shall issue the
following certificate/license:
- Land Surveyor-in-Training
An individual who passes the Fundamentals of Surveying may be certified by the Board as a
Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT). A certificate will be mailed to you.
Certificate Period: The term of certificate has no expiration
date after issuance.
- Professional Land Surveyor
An individual who passes the Fundamentals of Surveying Examination (may be waived if applying
under §15.305(d) (see LICENSE
REQUIREMENTS), the Principles and Practices Examination (P&P)
and two state-specific examinations, Maryland Law and Storm Drain and Road Grade Design, may be
licensed by the Board as a Professional Land Surveyor. Subject to the
exceptions stated in the law,
an individual who practices land surveying in the State must be licensed by the Board.
License Period: The term of licensure is a two years from the date of issuance.
Application Process
- FS and PS Examination applications are available online. You also apply online or
request an application by contacting the Board office.
- Certain supporting documentation will have to be filed separately, such as transcripts and/or
verification of licensure from another state, when appropriate. These forms can be mailed (with
appropriate fees, if applicable) to the Board, and must be received by the application filing deadline.

BY RECIPROCITY - Requirements
An applicant who is licensed to practice Surveying in another state or territory of the United
States may qualify for licensure by reciprocity if he or she provides adequate evidence that, at the
time he or she was licensed by the other state or territory he or she met requirements that were
equivalent to those required by Maryland; or, provides adequate evidence that, at the time of
application for reciprocity, he or she meets the requirements currently required by the laws of
Maryland, and having passed two state-specific examinations:
- Maryland Law
Open book, 60 multi-choice questions on Maryland Law and Regulations for Professional Land Surveyors (2 hours)
- Storm Drain and Road Grade Design
Open book, with calculator, principles and practices problem solving (4 hours).

Completed Reciprocity applications are reviewed by the Board at its monthly meeting (first Wednesday
of the month) and the applicant is notified shortly thereafter.
Reciprocal License Fee:
Because most reciprocal candidates will not have passed the state-specific exams required in Maryland,
the license fee is not paid until all requirements for licensure are met. A non-refundable
application fee is due at time of application.
Corporation, Limited Liability Company, Partnership (Permit)
A corporation, partnership, or LLC shall hold a permit issued by the Board before that entity may
operate a business through which land surveying or property line surveying is practiced.
Partnership: A partnership offering land surveying services in Maryland is required to obtain
a permit from the Maryland Board. A professional land surveyor or property line surveyor may practice
surveying for others through a partnership as a partner, employee, or agent of the partnership.
Corporation: A corporation offering land surveying services in Maryland is required to obtain
a permit from the Maryland Board. A professional land surveyor or property line surveyor may practice
surveying for others through a corporation as an officer, employee, or agent of the corporation.
Limited Liability Corporation: A limited liability company offering surveying services in
Maryland is required to obtain a permit from the Maryland Board. A professional land surveyor or
property line surveyor may practice surveying for others through a limited liability company as a member,
employee or agent of the limited liability company.
****Corporation and LLC Permit applicants must also apply to the Department of Assessments
and Taxation, at 410-767-1340, for a Certificate of Good Standing to submit
to the Board to complete their application. Contact the

fee (made payable to: "DLLR-PLS")
Completed Permit Applications are reviewed by the Board at its meeting, the first Wednesday of each
month, and the firm is notified in writing.
The permit period is two years from the date of issuance.
