Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation Green Jobs

A green economy is a dynamic, sustainable, and economically robust market system that responsibly utilizes scarce and finite natural resources, and that protects, restores, preserves, and enhances our environment, while improving the social conditions of workers and customers now and in the future.

As the green economy grows, job opportunities will arise...

The activities of this system may be focused on, but are not limited to:

  • Energy efficiency and conservation,
  • Alternative and/ or renewable energy production,
  • Waste management administration,
  • Environmental stewardship and/ or service

Green jobs are those that will support Maryland's growing green economy. They are focused on driving sustainable economic prosperity, ensuring efficient use and conservation of existing resources, promoting renewable and alternative energy production, preserving, and enhancing environmental quality, while improving the social conditions of fellow workers and customers.

Governor O'Malley is committed to a more sustainable future for Maryland and our economy. As the green economy grows, job opportunities will arise in an array of industries and occupations engaged in:

  • Energy Efficiency and Conservation
  • Green Building
  • Renewable and Alternative Energy
  • Waste Management
  • Environmental Quality

Many of the jobs in these sectors will build upon existing skill sets. Much of today's workforce will be able to transfer their knowledge to jobs in the new, green economy. See examples of green jobs below.
