Audits - UI Benefit Payment Control (BPC) - Unemployment Insurance Claimants |
| |
The Division of Unemployment Insurance conducts random audits of claimant eligibility. These
audits include the Maryland Report of Hire program, the
National Directory of New Hire program, the
Wage Crossmatch audit and audits instigated via reports of fraud
through the Fraud Hotline.
The Wage Crossmatch and is quarterly audit that matches earnings reported
by Maryland employers with claimants that have filed for and received unemployment insurance during the same
calendar quarter. Employers are sent employment and wage verification requests. Information is matched for any
weeks in which UI benefits were claimed and paid. Wages determined to have been earned during the same weeks
for which UI benefits were claimed are recorded and an overpayment created. The claimant is responsible for
the repayment of any UI benefits paid for which there were earnings. A determination of 'fraud' may also
accompany these findings. If a claimant quit or was terminated from this employer while filing, then a
separation decision is adjudicated and may also result in additional overpaid weeks of non-eligibility.
The Fraud Hotline (1-800-492-6804) is available to anyone to report suspected
UI fraud. This may involve, but is not limited to:
- Someone working and getting paid cash 'under the table', while collecting UI benefits
- Working full or part time and the employer/claimant is not reporting the earnings to the agency
- Unemployed claimant is not able, available or actively seeking work (illness, vacation, not interested
in working, no child care, taking care of sick relative, in school)
- Claimant is self employed; claimant has own business
