Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) Update - Unemployment Insurance Claimants

EMERGENCY UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION UPDATE (EUC) - December 17, 2010

IMPORTANT NOTICE

The United States Congress has extended the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) Program until January 3, 2012. The extension does not include any additional weeks of EUC benefits for claimants who have exhausted all entitlement to EUC benefits.

With the extension, claimants who exhaust their first 26 weeks of Maryland unemployment insurance (UI) benefits through the claim week ending December 24, 2011, will now be eligible to file for EUC benefits. Claimants will receive notification in the mail that they are eligible to file for these benefits. Claimants who are currently receiving EUC benefits will continue to receive them at this time.

Claimants who filed initial claims for EUC benefits after the EUC Program temporarily expired had been notified that their claims were being held pending reauthorization of the EUC Program. These claims will be processed beginning December 17, 2010. Payments will be made for any back weeks for which the claimants had filed timely continued claims as long as they are otherwise eligible. It is anticipated that it will take approximately one week before payments are made on all claims. Payment information may be accessed by phone via Telecert or on the internet via Webcert for the date that payment is made.

Claimants who were receiving EUC benefits but had those benefits suspended as they had received either 20 weeks of EUC benefits or 34 weeks of EUC benefits, will have their benefits reinstated. These claimants received notification of the suspension and were instructed to keep filing their continued claims (Webcert or Telecert). Benefits for all back weeks for which the claimants were otherwise eligible should be paid by December 23, 2010.

We will provide updated information concerning the continuing extension of the EUC Program, as information becomes available.

The Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation is committed to ensuring that claimants receive all benefits which are due.
